Several animals and insects in Singapore can cause unpleasant bites or stings. These include wasps, bees, centipedes, scorpions, snakes and spiders, which are found on land. Sea creatures that sting include the Portuguese Man-of-War (a type of jellyfish), the sea wasp (Box jellyfish), stonefish, sea urchins and cone shells. Stings from lionfish that are kept as pets in home aquariums are occasionally encountered.

Local effects of bites and stings include itching, irritation, redness and swelling. Substances that are absorbed into the bloodstream can affect other body organs.

If a victim is stung or bitten by an insect or animal, STAY CALM, and give the DPIC a call at 6423-9119. Call 995 Emergency Medical Services for an ambulance if the victim becomes unconscious and/or unresponsive, develops fits/convulsions, or stops breathing.
