Scorpions sting with their barbed tails. The stings may cause a burning pain and swelling. The onset of pain and swelling is immediate. Numbness, tenderness and tingling at the site of the sting can occur one hour later. Other symptoms that may occur are swelling of the face, tongue and throat, and pain or tightness in the chest or back. Large amount of highly toxic venom can cause fever, tearing, nausea, vomiting, confusion and difficulty breathing.
First aid for scorpion stings
- Wash the sting site with soap and water.
- Wrap a few ice cubes in a towel and apply on the area for 10-15 minutes to stop the pain and swelling. To prevent frostbite, do not apply ice directly on the sting area.
